Lynx is a constellation that lies between Auriga and Ursa Major, north of Gemini and Cancer. Lynx is best viewed in the late spring. Lynx was first described by the Dutch astronomer Johann Hevelius. The constellation may be related to the story of Porserpine’s abduction to the underworld and Ceres’ search for her daughter. After an arrangement with Pluto allowed Poserpine to spend 6 months of each year with her mother and 6 month with Pluto, said to be the source of the seasons, Ceres granted a gift of seeds to the kingdoms of the Earth. It is said that King Lyncus was jealous of the gift-bearer and through his treachery was punished by Ceres and turned into the Lynx.
